Thymalin

Thymalin peptide complex, thymus extract

A bovine thymus extract from the same Soviet research programme that produced epitalon, with decades of clinical reports and essentially no independent replication.

Preclinical only

Registered and used in Russia and some former Soviet states. Not approved in the United States, Europe or any Western jurisdiction, and never submitted for approval in them.

What it is

Thymalin is a polypeptide complex extracted from bovine thymus, developed by Khavinson and Morozov in the 1970s as part of the Soviet bioregulator programme. It is not a single defined molecule but a mixture of short peptides, and the proposed mechanism is that these bind DNA or histones and modulate gene expression in immune cells.

The same programme produced epitalon, and the two entries share a problem.

The evidence has the same shape as epitalon's

There is a substantial body of clinical work, published over decades, reporting that thymalin restores immune parameters in elderly subjects: T-lymphocyte counts, natural killer cell activity, cytokine balance, neutrophil function. A frequently cited assessment followed 266 elderly people over six to eight years and reported a two-fold reduction in acute respiratory illness alongside reduced cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disease.

Those are large claims. They come almost entirely from one research lineage, published in a narrow set of journals, largely unblinded, and they have not been independently replicated outside that lineage.

More recent work reported that thymalin improved immune status and recovery from lymphopenia in older patients with severe COVID-19. It comes from the same group.

Why that matters more here than usual

Because thymalin is an animal tissue extract, not a synthetic peptide of known sequence.

Thymosin alpha-1 is a defined 28 amino acid peptide, manufactured to specification, approved in more than thirty countries, with trials run by parties who did not develop it. Thymalin is a preparation from bovine thymus whose exact composition depends on the extraction, evaluated almost exclusively by its originators.

Those are very different evidentiary situations, and they are routinely discussed as though interchangeable.

Practical notes

  • Extract variability is not a solvable problem for a buyer. Two vials labelled thymalin from different sources are not necessarily the same preparation, and no certificate of analysis for a mixture establishes equivalence to what was studied.
  • The single-lineage issue is the whole question. Nothing here proves the findings are wrong. It means they have never survived the test that matters, which is somebody unconnected reproducing them.
  • If the goal is a thymic peptide with real evidence, thymosin alpha-1 is the one with it. That entry has trials, approvals and independent scrutiny.

Side effects and warning signs

Commonly reported

  • Injection-site irritation
  • Occasional low-grade fever after the first doses, self-reported
  • No systematic Western safety dataset exists, so the short list reflects absence of study

Stop and get medical help

  • Autoimmune disease, since the compound is presented as an immune stimulant and stimulating an already misdirected immune system is not obviously desirable
  • It is an animal tissue extract rather than a defined synthetic peptide, which raises purity and immunogenicity questions no vendor can answer
